New Music/VOD: Magic Fountain by Art vs. Science

I first heard this song when I saw the video for this with some amazing mates in Sydney, Australia and I knew I had to share it with more people from back home. The song is great but for me its the video that kills it. So here you go, a little slice of the craziness that was my two weeks in Sydney Australia. Magic Fountain by Art vs. Science

If that was your kind of thing, honorable mention goes to “Flippers“. And you have to see the “use you flippers to get down” aka amazing dance moves look.

New Music/VOD: Foster The People – Pump Up Kicks

Heard this on the radio yesterday and I liked it enough to track it down online. I am totally into this low-fi/shoegaze/whatever genre stuff right now. Apparently these kids are just getting their big break so expect more good stuff in the future.

Dedicated to shitty Toronto weather. Or rather, dedicated to a sunnier tomorrow.

WAIT A SECOND. Turns out they’re playing Toronto’s very own Mod Club on June 18th (oh yes, that’s a Saturday you 9-5ers). Anyone else interested? To help convince everyone (myself even), here’s a link to some of their live performances.

Musical Obsession: Kanye’s Killing It

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The album is one of those great moments where you listen to each song and about a 2/3 of the way through, you realize “Hey, I have really enjoyed every song so far!” And as that dawns upon you you’re thinking, “What’s wrong with me? I’m lovin’ this Kanye West album.” Now if you can get past your ego or your general negativity towards the rap/hip-hop musical genre, I guarantee you might be surprised at how amazing this album is: lyrically, musically, completely. The following is a few of my insta-favorites but really the true joy is in listening it all the way through a few times.

Lost In The World feat. Bon Iver (aka the ultra chill-electro song)

Dark Fantasy (aka the perfect introduction to incredible layering and artistic insight)

Blame Game feat. John Legend (and Chris Rock) (aka the most polarizing and beyond borderline offensively funny song that is still somehow a work of art in itself)

Many of you will not agree that this is great stuff and that’s cool. A lot of you will think I jumped on the Kanye bandwagon like every other yahoo – and that’s cool too except I quickly retort “I jumped on back when Stronger came out sucka.” (Yes, I am aware of all irony.) Point is, this album was compelling enough to make me break my hiatus and get back to collecting my often crazy, absurd, musical obsessions – even while abroad. Touche Mr. West. Touche.

In fact I may throw a pop culture thing up from India or Thailand or wherever I am. See i’m a nice guy. Peace out, Tin Man.

Massive TIFF Post: Movie Reviews in Haiku Form

The Tin Man loves film and really anybody who knows him knows this – he tends to blather on about it. So imagine his joy at being able to attend his first Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The Tin Man saw a lot of films this year, EIGHT to be exact, and he’s pretty artsy/lazy so below are Haiku Reviews of those 8 films. He hopes you got out there and saw a film or eight too.

———-
Score: A Hockey Musical.
Hockey and singing…
Really, what were they thinking?
Don’t waste your time.

Tin Man’s Verdict:
I’d pass if I were you… (get it? do you see what I did there?) (C+)

———-

Dhobi Ghat (Mumbai Diaries)
Interconnection.
Mumbai, shown in all her ways.
Island, one is not.

TMV:
Amazing film. Layered characters in interconnecting stories.  An ode to Mumbai yet as close to the opposite of Bollywood as possible. (A-)

———-

127 Hours
Desperate, intense.
What would you do to survive?
Don’t ignore phone calls!

TMV:
Everyone’s talking about James Franco. He gives not only a great performance – he is the movie. Not for the weak stomached; someone passed out in the seats near us. (B)

———-
Black Swan
Some die in pursuit,
the high price of perfection.
It will consume you.

TMV:
Warning, you will not feel warm and fluffy during this film. Beautifully shot, well acted, disturbing. Aronofsky’s films are borderline insane which is why I’m drawn to them. (B+)

———-

Barney’s Version
The most beautiful
thing is a life fully lived.
Will you remember?

TMV:
What I thought was going to be a comedy turns out to be probably the most touching film I’ve seen all year (yes, even more emotional than Toy Story 3… somehow). Go see this movie and then go find someone you love and never let go. (A)

———-
Kaboom!
Religious drug trip.
Horny college comedy.
Softcore porn on drugs.

TVM:
If that haiku made little sense its because the movie its based on made even less sense. A good ride but really just an excuse to see hot naked people fucking on drugs. Not even kidding. Confirms what we all knew to be true: animal masks are creepy. (B-)

———-

Confessions

Confessions so dark,
lives damaged beyond repair.
Revenge? Just kidding.

TMV:
If you can get past subtitles (this is a Japanese film), this is THE film to see. A tale of revenge but oh so much more – devastating in all ways. Almost a philosophy lesson in the value of life. Beautifully executed. Oh and its Japan’s Oscar entry for 2011, no big deal. (A+)

———-
Last Night
Infidelity.
One night, one chance. Temptation.
Will you be faithful?

TMV: The only film where I have been impressed with Kiera Knightley’s acting. Some may find this slow. I personally loved the restrained nature of the exposition of a marriage tempted by a seductress and strained by a past lover. (B+)

——-
Wowzers, 11 days in one post is lonnnnng. So there you have it. The Tin Man loved every moment of TIFF 2010. He hopes he’s lucky enough to see such quality films at TIFF in the near future.

Bottom Line (for those keeping track):
Must See! – Confessions, Barney’s Version, Dhobi Ghat, Black Swan
Should See. – Last Night, 127 Hours
Could See? – Kaboom!
Don’t See… – Score

Time to go pass out for 3 days. Tin Man out.

New Music: “Cameras” by Matt and Kim

You probably haven’t heard of Matt and Kim. If you have, I’m gonna guess it is probably because of their headline-grabbing music video wherein they streak through Times Square, NYC in the dead of winter. That’s before the cops show up. Life lessons to learn from that: safety before nudity kids! Anyways, that’s the only reason I had ever heard of them…until now!

Their new single “Cameras” is a happy little number; pretty different from their old stuff. Nothing special per say. It just makes me happy, so sue me… sorry anger. One more play and I’ll be good. Enjoy!

F-Yeah It’s Friday! featuring Jimmy Fallon’s Emmy Entrance

Welcome to F-Yeah It’s Friday! Every Friday I am going to try (and remember) to post something that made me smile, laugh, or just be happy. Enjoy friends.

This week we have Jimmy Fallon’s awesome Glee-like entrance to the Emmys to the tune of “Born to Run” by The Boss. Now I am one of those Glee-naysayers but even I agree that this is just a lot of fun. I don’t wanna give too much away but Jon Hamm kills it! Also mad props to Tina Fey channeling the Rocky Horror Picture Show and a Hurley sighting. (Sigh, I miss LOST)

This makes me kinda wanna watch Glee… kinda. Does this make a Gleek out of you? Are you gonna watch The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon? (His house band is The Roots, by the way. As if you needed another reason.) Does this beat Hugh Jackman’s awesome one-man-show Oscar intro? What do you guys think?

New Music: The Onslaught of Nicki Minaj

Over the past month, The Tin Man has been bombarded from all sides by stories and songs from one Nicki Minaj. Pardon my… err vulgarity. But this bitch is exploding allover the place and its gonna be a fuckin’ mess.

I’ve read at least 3 articles dedicated to proclaiming her as the new Queen of Hip Hop/Rap. With no other female MC on the scene this really isn’t a surprise. Then there was the whole fake marriage over twitter to Drake fiasco. They broke up a day later… oh young fake cyber love.

Personally, I don’t find her single, Your Love which samples the hell outta Annie Lennox’s “No More I Love You’s”, all too impressive. It’s pretty repetitive and kinda whatever for someone making such a big splash.

I really started caring about her today when I heard Monster. Monster is a Kanye West creation loaded with guests including your boy Jay, Rick Ross, Nicki (of course) and kinda head-scratchingly Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. Check it out below.
